Sonoma Roadside 2017 Grenache, Sonoma Valley
The 2018 Sonoma Valley Roadside Grenache was exclusively grown and produced for the girl & the fig. It is medium bodied and fruit forward, delicate yet complex with cherries, wild red berries, fresh strawberries, cinnamon and a hint of rose petal on the nose. Concentrated with mouth coating red fruit and berries, subtly spicy on the palate, followed by smooth tannins that make for an elegant, long finish.
This wine is a fifty/fifty blend of two renowned sites in our paradisiacal Sonoma valley. One vineyard is located high above the valley floor on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains overlooking Boyes Hot Springs and the other in a cobbly vineyard not far from the San Francisco Bay. The two very different climates come together to make a truly balanced wine that reflects the duality of our valley.
The fruit was brought into the winery on two different dates but the processes were the same, both foot trodded before they were put into tank, whole cluster. No cold soaking, the must was allowed to warm and begin fermentation with only what was in or on the grapes. After a few days, once native fermentation had begun, I pump over the tanks once daily and also foot trod the tanks once daily. Once the juice is dry, I press into a small tank and allow the wine to settle. Because of the whole cluster, the wine is typically still sweet at this point. I then move the wine into a combination of neutral and once used French oak barrels where the wine finishes first primary fermentation and then malolactic fermentation. The wine is racked once during its 18 months rest in in barrels and then it was bottled in February 2020.
