Bedrock Wine Co. 2018 Viognier, Shake Ridge, Sierra Foothills
Grown at 1800’ elevation at Ann Kraemer’s incredible Shake Ridge Ranch in the southern section of Amador County. The vineyard consists of multiple soil types but the rows for this wine are planted on decomposed granite (similar but not identical to the schists of Condrieu). Days are warm here but the high elevation makes for a strong diurnal shift (cold nights) which allows the sometimes lower acidity Viognier to retain freshness and natural acidity.
After night-picking the fruit was gently pressed and allowed to settle overnight prior to racking to barrel. Native yeast fermentation was done in a combination of used and once used barrels from Stockinger (a cooper founded in 1591 in the Austrian Alps renowned for making barrels for white wine). The wine was inhibited from going through malolactic conversion to retain acidity. The wine was bottled after eight months of elevage.
